Vacherie, located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in St
James Parish lies on a geographical ridge created by a
distributary of the Mississippi River that originally flowed towards
Lake Des Allemands. The old distributary is no longer visible, having
been turned by the plow into sugarcane fields.
Vacherie means "a place for cattle", and one can still smell the sweet,
country air of early morning, when the dust and the sand in the barn
yard stuck to your feet like the sole of an old shoe.
